TTS Fall Tour - Day 1

Two Tons Midwest Tour

Day 1, Dispatch 1 - We're en route to Shreveport, LA. Playing El Dorado Casino tonight. Should be fun! We're 2 hrs into a 2 week run travelling through the heart of our nation. Check twotons.com for tour dates and check in at twotonsofsteel.blogspot.com for more online fun and Two Tons hijinks as I chronicle our adventures! More soon...

Day 1, Dispatch 2 - Roughly a 1/2 hr outside of Shreveport. 7 hours on the road today. No worries! Showtime between 8:00-8:30. Two 75 min sets. Easy peasy. Stay tuned...

Day 1, Dispatch 3 - Wow. Was so looking forward to playing tonight. Rough, rough night. Don't know why. Fatigue? I mean it's only the first day, but I know I haven't had a full night's rest in at least 4 nights and with 7 hours on the road today -- I'm pretty wiped out. We're off tomorrow but we have almost 6 hours to drive up to Memphis where we'll stay and then drive the rest of the way to Springfield, IL on Friday. Hopefully with a day off and splitting an extra long drive across 2 days, the next show will come together better.
****
After having written the above, I spent some time hanging around the casino bar with David, our soundman, and a new friend, Cameron Meshell. These 2 guys made tonight worth it. Great conversation and a good time. Ended the night by walking around the casino with Dennis and laughing about all the crazy themes of all the different slot machines. Dennis pointes out that it seems there's something to appeal to everybody's tastes. We saw lots of ladies playing "Kitty Glitter" & we couldn't help but laugh! It's now 2:31am and check out is once again at 11:00am. It's off to bed for me. 'Night all. Here's to the rest of this tour.

Uh oh...

So we're downtown Austin, playing a street party & waiting for the previous band to get off the stage so we can set up and start our set. The smell of diesel is in the air as we stand in front of the generator right by the stage. Dennis walks up and tells me he mysteriously got our set time delayed indefinitely. "Huh?" I say. Turns out the pooling of fluid around the generator wasn't a gathering of the day's earlier afternoon rains, but rather a leaking of diesel all over the sidewalk. Generator's shut down and our set is cut waaaaaay back due to stay on schedule for the rest of the night.

We talked about the movie "Spinal Tap" the other night. Seems tonight when I get home will be the perfect night to enjoy that film again. It's funny regardless, but for those of us making our livings as professional musicians (and drummers), it's REALLY funny. Here's to "show biz".

Get out!

"Check out is at noon" Kevin says as we climb out of the van last night at 1:30am and head for our rooms. Housekeeping drove us crazy all morning trying to get in to clean our room. As I get out of the shower - another knock at our door. Dennis says "housekeeping's been very persistent about cleaning our room". As Dennis is taking his shower, another knock at the door. I open it and with a head full of wet, nappy hair, I see the hotel manager in front of me. "You guys gonna check out today?" he asks. "Uh, yeah? In 10 minutes - at noon?" I respond. "Okay because checkout was at 11:00".

No wonder they were trying so hard to get into our room. We overstayed our welcome.

Brilliant.

Day 1 - From Texas to England, with love...

As is so often the case, I did not get near enough rest the night before an international trip and I've been a little "fuzzy" all day long. We left San Antonio for Houston at 1:45 and by 3:45 we were on our way from Houston to London. We had a great flight - if a little uncomfortable. Seems I'm tall enough that when I fall asleep I have no support for my head so it falls back and I wake up a short time later with pain. So even when I try to sleep, it only comes in short painful spurts. Once we arrived in London, it was quite a long wait to get through customs and then to get our luggage. Fortunately we were met at the airport with our driver and no wait. We didn't waste any time getting on our way to Nottinghamshire from the airport. It should have been about a 3 hr drive but our driver cruised a good part of the way at 100 mph. Funny how Kevin and Rhoades hate the way Fallon and I drive, but seemed perfectly content to travel at light-speed in a car with a driver we just met, traveling on a highway we don't know, in a land we've never been in... Oh well.

It's 9:05 pm where I am now and the sun is just now beginning to set. I am in the hotel restaurant which is located near the lobby of our weekend home. I haven't been hungry for much of the day so it will be nice to have a hot meal to end this day of traveling. I just had a tasty bowl of tuscan chicken soup and I'm now waiting for my dinner while sipping on a pint of John Smith's Smooth Ale. My dinner of scottish salmon in a crawfish and prawn (shrimp) sauce with steamed fresh veggies. It's quiet here. The solitude is nice. Alone - but not lonely. Here's wishing you well as night begins to fall on me and I hope that you're happy too wherever you are when reading this. Have a great Friday and stay tuned, I'll be updating this online journal throughout the weekend with dispatches from the field as our adventure unfolds. Gotta run - dinner's here. Cheers.

The sun never sets on jolly old England...

This week marks the halfway point to the end of the year (roughly). Maybe it's because I'm a dad, but it seems I measure my life in terms of how close I am or how far I am away from Christmas and the turning of another page to a new calendar year. The summer solstice has passed and the days will begin to grow shorter as we begin to spin further away from the sun. That's not say there's not still plenty of summer yet to enjoy (and plenty of sangria to be consumed). The spring was unseasonably mild in South Texas and even with the wave of summer heat that's finally descended upon us, the rain around here has helped to keep most everything green. I finally have a lawn to mow again and it doesn't look half bad. (but it doesn't look half good either - yes, I know, thank you Fallon...) We had 900 or more folks in the big hall in Gruene last Tuesday night and we're looking forward to what the rest of the summer holds. I'm amazed at how our annual Two Ton Tuesdays have continued to bring so many people out to hear us play. On average, we play to 10,000 people every summer over the course of 12 or 13 Tuesdays. We're not quite halfway through our 15th annual season and hopefully you've been able to make it out to enjoy the festivities. If not, there's still plenty of time to come join us in Gruene.

2 Tons rolls into England - God save the Queen...

This week finds us back home after a weekend of performances at the Continental Club in Austin, a holiday party in Seguin, and from playing a 4th of July celebration in Katy.  This Thursday we'll head across the big pond again to play for our friends overseas. We'll be performing next Sunday evening in Nottinghamshire, England, for the Americana International festival. We're pretty excited about it and I can't wait to document through celluloid our adventures (or iPhone/Hipstamatic camera - does that count?). Dennis suggested that we all dress as Robin Hood since the festival is held in a big English forest.  He also suggested that since we always encounter such a language barrier, maybe it would be wise for all of us to bring phrase books on this trip (instead of just him) to help close the gap when trying to communicate with the locals while far from home and roaming in a foreign land...

No bloke looks as cool in tights as I do...

If he gets his way, it should make for some pretty great photos. No worries though, we'll make it back home in time to rock New Braunfels again next Tuesday night. If you can't make it to England, come see us in Gruene. Happy 5th of July, everybody, and have a great week.

Cold beer, hot women, and cool country music...

My goodness. My apologies. I've fallen down on the job. Again. Seems life gets in the way and I don't make the time to sit down and gather my thoughts and squeeze them through the word grinder so I can bake you a blogloaf often enough (wha?). In my last dispatch I left you with updates on our Island-of-Misfit-Toys Band Van and all the radiator problems we were having. That was only back in March but it seems like ages ago to me now. The van was fixed and now she's purring like a kitten as we bounce happily down the road. Since that time we've logged thousands more miles and tonight our show at the dancehall in Luckenbach will be roughly the 44th show since I last updated this journal. We spent almost 2 weeks travelling north up into the Midwest and met many kind folks and played some awesome shows, saw some neat rooms, and had a fantastic time! We also took part in Reckless Kelly's Celebrity Softball Jam at the Dell Diamond in Roundrock and it seems we've been everywhere in between.

We're gearing up now for Two Ton Tuesdays at Gruene Hall which will start next week on Tuesday night, June 1st, and will run every Tuesday night in the summer through August 17th. This will be the 15th year we've done this summer run and I love playing them every week. We play to thousands of folks from all over the world who come out to see us and there's nothing more fun than watching all the great dancing in such a neat old hall. I love the water. I love the river running below. I swim after the Tuesday night shows with my kids – sometimes til 3:00am. Be sure you put it on your calendars and come join us on Tuesday nights in Gruene throughout the summer.

Gruene Hall and the 15th annual Two Ton Tuesdays are only part of the reason I'm writing today. I also want to take a minute to talk to you about a friend of mine. His name is Chris Rhoades and night after night he stands by me onstage and hammers out the bass lines you hear in our music. Together we are a rhythm section dynamo (Chris - you complete me), but as he drove away from the venue last night, something dawned on me. He must like ice cream. Maybe it was from his early upbringing in Indiana. He claims that those cold winters throughout the Midwest taught him that he hated the cold weather and along with his love of music, that's why he moved to Texas. Fair enough. I say there was something about the cold that became a part of his inner fabric. Consider this. His Fender bass 8x10 cabinet is nearly the size of a full household upright refrigerator.

It feels like we're a moving company on some nights trying to haul that thing around, too. There are also nights more recently where even he decides that the "fridge" is not necessary and he has begun to bring a smaller cabinet with him that is lighter and much easier to move around, but none the less - this thing looks like a collegiate mini-fridge.

As he drove away last night, I realized that even the Scion that he drives looks like a fridge. For somebody with such disdain for the cold, the guy sure seems to long for low temperatures. Maybe these serve as daily reminders of happy times in his home as a child growing up with his family.

Whatever it is, I just thought I'd share this unique coincidence I've noticed over the last few weeks and see if anybody else agrees? And come to think of it, Goshen isn't that far from Chicago...

William "Refrigerator" Perry

Christopher "Rally 'Stache" Rhoades
They both have moustaches - and now we know why he's so "cool"...

Hot summer nights are fast approaching us. Ice cream sure sounds good about now. See you in Gruene.
