Day 1 - From Texas to England, with love...

As is so often the case, I did not get near enough rest the night before an international trip and I've been a little "fuzzy" all day long. We left San Antonio for Houston at 1:45 and by 3:45 we were on our way from Houston to London. We had a great flight - if a little uncomfortable. Seems I'm tall enough that when I fall asleep I have no support for my head so it falls back and I wake up a short time later with pain. So even when I try to sleep, it only comes in short painful spurts. Once we arrived in London, it was quite a long wait to get through customs and then to get our luggage. Fortunately we were met at the airport with our driver and no wait. We didn't waste any time getting on our way to Nottinghamshire from the airport. It should have been about a 3 hr drive but our driver cruised a good part of the way at 100 mph. Funny how Kevin and Rhoades hate the way Fallon and I drive, but seemed perfectly content to travel at light-speed in a car with a driver we just met, traveling on a highway we don't know, in a land we've never been in... Oh well.

It's 9:05 pm where I am now and the sun is just now beginning to set. I am in the hotel restaurant which is located near the lobby of our weekend home. I haven't been hungry for much of the day so it will be nice to have a hot meal to end this day of traveling. I just had a tasty bowl of tuscan chicken soup and I'm now waiting for my dinner while sipping on a pint of John Smith's Smooth Ale. My dinner of scottish salmon in a crawfish and prawn (shrimp) sauce with steamed fresh veggies. It's quiet here. The solitude is nice. Alone - but not lonely. Here's wishing you well as night begins to fall on me and I hope that you're happy too wherever you are when reading this. Have a great Friday and stay tuned, I'll be updating this online journal throughout the weekend with dispatches from the field as our adventure unfolds. Gotta run - dinner's here. Cheers.

The sun never sets on jolly old England...

This week marks the halfway point to the end of the year (roughly). Maybe it's because I'm a dad, but it seems I measure my life in terms of how close I am or how far I am away from Christmas and the turning of another page to a new calendar year. The summer solstice has passed and the days will begin to grow shorter as we begin to spin further away from the sun. That's not say there's not still plenty of summer yet to enjoy (and plenty of sangria to be consumed). The spring was unseasonably mild in South Texas and even with the wave of summer heat that's finally descended upon us, the rain around here has helped to keep most everything green. I finally have a lawn to mow again and it doesn't look half bad. (but it doesn't look half good either - yes, I know, thank you Fallon...) We had 900 or more folks in the big hall in Gruene last Tuesday night and we're looking forward to what the rest of the summer holds. I'm amazed at how our annual Two Ton Tuesdays have continued to bring so many people out to hear us play. On average, we play to 10,000 people every summer over the course of 12 or 13 Tuesdays. We're not quite halfway through our 15th annual season and hopefully you've been able to make it out to enjoy the festivities. If not, there's still plenty of time to come join us in Gruene.

2 Tons rolls into England - God save the Queen...

This week finds us back home after a weekend of performances at the Continental Club in Austin, a holiday party in Seguin, and from playing a 4th of July celebration in Katy.  This Thursday we'll head across the big pond again to play for our friends overseas. We'll be performing next Sunday evening in Nottinghamshire, England, for the Americana International festival. We're pretty excited about it and I can't wait to document through celluloid our adventures (or iPhone/Hipstamatic camera - does that count?). Dennis suggested that we all dress as Robin Hood since the festival is held in a big English forest.  He also suggested that since we always encounter such a language barrier, maybe it would be wise for all of us to bring phrase books on this trip (instead of just him) to help close the gap when trying to communicate with the locals while far from home and roaming in a foreign land...

No bloke looks as cool in tights as I do...

If he gets his way, it should make for some pretty great photos. No worries though, we'll make it back home in time to rock New Braunfels again next Tuesday night. If you can't make it to England, come see us in Gruene. Happy 5th of July, everybody, and have a great week.
